Mercifully, there’s only one day left in the carcinogenic U.S. election campaign of 2016, to be known hereafter as the year in which democracy fell gravely ill.
The most obvious cancer symptom in global democracy is Donald Trump’s campaign. But that’s the gaudiest one and closest to home. There are many others.
Under Vladimir Putin, authoritarian Russia is modernizing its nuclear arsenal and expanding its military, while crushing internal dissent. The Kremlin is accused of attacking Western communications networks and of interfering in the U.S. election campaign in favour of Trump.
