WASHINGTON – In U.S. President Barack Obama’s own words, “It has been, and still is, a hard time for many, but the “shadow of crisis has passed.”
This somewhat conflicting statement, uttered in the same breath, is one reason commentators are baffled by a state of the union address that seemed more like a campaign speech.
While there is no doubt the U.S. economy is emerging from the shadows of the 2008 recession – the projected growth rate this year is 3.5 per cent – it is still not in the clear.
