Justin Trudeau will visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp today before flying to Ukraine after spending the past two days at the NATO leaders summit in Warsaw, Poland.
Officials say the prime minister personally requested to see the site where more than 1 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered by the Nazis during the Second World War.
Trudeau is following in the footsteps of Jean Chretien and Stephen Harper, who also visited Auschwitz during their terms as prime minister. He’ll be escorted by a survivor of the death camp, who was only 11 years old when he was sent there with his family.
