Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was freed from detention in Ukraine on Monday, after a judge rejected prosecutors’ request to put him under house arrest.
“The prosecutors’ petition … is dismissed,” judge Larysa Tsokol told the court, Reuters reported. During the eight-hour hearing, hundreds of Saakashvili’s supporters protested outside the courthouse, and later cheered the judge’s decision.
Saakashvili, who served as Georgia’s president for two terms until 2013, was arrested Friday and has been accused of helping a criminal organization.
