KIEV —Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s political bloc on Friday backed the speaker of parliament, Volodymyr Groysman, to replace Arseniy Yatsenyuk as prime minister.
The endorsement raised hopes about a possible end to the country’s month-old political deadlock, which was brought on by last month’s failed no-confidence vote against the unpopular Yatsenyuk.
The president’s team wants parliament to approve Groysman at its next session on Tuesday — one day before Poroshenko goes to Washington to attend a nuclear security summit.
Billions of dollars of financial support are at stake, as the International Monetary Fund and other donors have warned they could cut off assistance
