Century old Bulgarian beech forests will enter the list of world heritage under a UNESCO project. The protected forests are in the nine nature reserves of the Central Balkan National Park. The project is initiated by the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, nature protection and nuclear safety, with the aim to preserve the unique old beech woodlands of Europe. Besides the Bulgarian woodland territory the project covers protected territories in Austria, Albania, Belgium, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Ukraine, Spain, Italy and Croatia.
