Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on July 8 visited the former rebel stronghold of Slovyansk after government forces recaptured it from pro-Russian separatists. Speaking to local residents outside the city administration building, Poroshenko said Slovyansk was now the “symbol of the liberated Donbas.” He said the Ukrainian army would continue its offensive against the rebels but added Kyiv was open to dialogue with all those ready to lay down their arms.
