Fighting between government forces and rebels in Ukraine’s industrial heartland has killed more than 10,000 people and displaced more than 1 million since it began in 2014.
The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday welcoming the deployment of a 5,000-strong force from five countries in Africa’s vast Sahel region to fight the growing threat from extremists.
Muslim rebels fled after freeing dozens of hostages from a school in a southern Philippine village on Wednesday and were being pursued by army troops, as a daylong crisis eased in in the volatile region, officials said.
