Denis Voronenkov, former Russian lawmaker and a well-known critic of President Vladimir Putin, was shot dead in broad daylight outside a hotel in Kiev on Thursday.
Voronenkov, a member of the Communist party in Russia’s lower house before fleeing to Ukraine in 2016 due to concerns for his safety, became an unabashed critic of Putin’s policies, recently calling Russia’s annexation of Crimea, a “mistake” and likening the mood and political process in Russia to Nazi Germany, in a radio interview broadcast in February.
“People are behaving in a pseudo-patriotic frenzy,” he said.
