Sweden has reintroduced mandatory conscription as a result of growing worries over Russia’s increased military manoeuvres in the Baltic states, with a recent study suggesting the current Nato force would no longer adequately protect the region.
According to the Swedish defense ministry, 13,000 teenagers born in 1999 and 2000 will be called to take part in the new system, which is due to come online from Jan. 1 next year. Those chosen will be subjected to psychological and physical tests. From this initial group, around 4,000 men and women will be called up for service.
