(JTA) — Hundreds of Jews from across Belarus gathered in the capital Minsk for its first Limmud conference, a festival of Jewish learning that also drew visitors from Israel to the isolated country in Eastern Europe.
Approximately 750 people came to the three-day event’s opening session Friday, organized by Limmud FSU together with Belarussian officials and the local Israeli embassy.
Officials often attend the openings of Limmud FSU conference in Russia, Ukraine and other former Soviet countries. Joint government partnerships in Limmud FSU events are, however, rare.
