French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault on Monday called on EU leaders to discuss possible offers for relaxation of the economic sanctions imposed by the Union on Russia over the Ukraine crisis if there was significant progress in the implementation of the Minsk peace accords.
The summit should send “some signs of encouragement to everyone”, Jean-Marc Ayrault told reporters in Luxembourg after meeting with his EU counterparts.
The sanctions imposed in 2014 over Moscow’s support for the pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine are to expire at end-July.
The EU summit next week is likely to extend the sanctions for another six months.
