There isn’t another jazz pianist like the five-time Juno nominee John Stetch. Who else but the Edmonton-raised New Yorker tackles everything from the blues to Chopin to Ukrainian folk to free improvising to TV show themes in the course of a night?
A latecomer to his instrument, Stetch, 50, fashioned his own aesthetic, knitting together the music he loves long before mashups became common. He’ll offer a sample of his musical wares at a free solo concert Thursday at Steinway Piano Gallery Ottawa in the city’s east end. The concert kicks off a seven-city Canadian tour that runs to Oct. 2.
