After an 18-month shadow campaign, European Commission Vice President Kristalina Georgieva has succeeded in convincing her country’s prime minister, Bulgaria’s Boris Borisov, to nominate her for the post of United Nations secretary-general.
Borisov told reporters Wednesday in Sofia that Georgieva’s candidacy “will be more likely to succeed” than that of Bulgaria’s previous pick for the secretary-general job, UNESCO chief Irina Bokova, Agence France-Presse reported.
Bokova ranked only sixth in the latest informal poll of candidates U.N. Security Council members support to succeed current Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and was considered out of the running.
