The European Union chose new leadership Saturday, announcing Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Turk as its new council president. EU leaders chose Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini to succeed Catherine Ashton as head of foreign policy for the 28-nation bloc. Former Belgian Prime Minster Herman Van Rompuy, who currently heads the European Council, said the transition of power comes at a critical time for the EU, as it addresses the crisis of a bellicose Russia and unstable Ukraine on its eastern front.
