Perry Bellegarde, the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, was raised on the Little Black Bear First Nation, in Treaty Four territory. Within eight months of being elected chief of the band, he led it out of third-party management. Bellegarde oversaw the transfer of the Fort Qu’Appelle Indian Hospital to First Nations control, and later negotiated a national multi-million-dollar compensation package for First Nations veterans and their spouses. He was elected national chief in 2014.
