Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has blamed the upsurge in fighting in eastern Ukraine on government forces.
He was talking to his US counterpart John Kerry by telephone.
In a separate phone call to the European Union’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, the Russian Foreign Minister said the bloc should push Ukraine towards political dialogue with separatists in its east region.
