Ukraine’s prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, resigned today (24 July) following his failure to push through two pieces of legislation and the decision by two parties to leave the governing coalition.
Ukrainian media report that the political parties had been negotiating behind closed doors about the possibility of leaving the government, and their decision was welcomed by President Petro Poroshenko. “Society wants a full reset of state authorities,” Poroshenko said in a statement.
Poroshenko came to power in May after winning a landslide victory that dispelled perceptions of Ukraine as a country inherently divided between Ukrainian- and Russian-speaking communities.
