The Conservative government has gone with an experienced combat veteran and team player as the country’s new top military officer.
Lt.-Gen. Jonathan Vance, as expected, was named chief of the defence staff by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Monday.
Vance, an army officer, takes over a Canadian Forces that is trying to deal with cuts imposed by the Conservative government, as well as a navy that is being hindered by a lack of ships for the near future.
