Vice President of the International Wrestling Federation Georgy Brusov stated that four Olympic champions will participate in the upcoming European Wrestling Championship. They are the winners of the 2016 Olympics Artur Aleksanyan (Armenia), Taha Akgül (Turkey), Vladimir Khinchegashvili (Georgia) and Olympic champion in 2012 Sharif Sharifov (Azerbaijan).
As noted by the Vice President, at present 34 countries have applied for participation. Ukraine is out of the leading countries, as Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs of that country Igor Zhdanov urged Ukrainian athletes not to participate in the tournaments held in Russia.
