The downing of MH17 has complicated the situation for Russia President Vladimir Putin, but he’s not finished yet. Alastair Newton of Nomura has a note titled “Russia/Ukraine: ‘Check’…but not ‘checkmate'” in which he analyzes the most recent round of Western sanctions against Russia over Ukraine and lays out some of Putin’s options. The EU measures, largely matched by the U.S., “intensify the direct pain on Moscow and add ‘psychological’ pressure, in my view, by keeping the EU and the US more or less in lockstep,” Newton writes, noting that pressure investors tangentially to reduce direct exposure to Russia.
