The Netherlands has always had a fragmented political system but never quite like this: a record-breaking 81 parties registered to compete in the March 15 general election.
The electoral council on Friday announced the final list, cutting the number of parties on the ballot paper down to 28. The others either failed to comply with the rules, didn’t pay the required fee, failed to get enough support in all electoral districts or decided to drop out.
