Angela Merkel: Eastern Europe needs NATO assurances


Russia’s actions in Ukraine have left NATO’s Eastern allies “deeply unsettled,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday as she justified the Alliance’s planned deployment of four battalions in the Baltic states and Poland.
Addressing the lower house of the German parliament, Merkel said “trust had been lost” with Moscow due to its lack of respect for “the validity of the law and the inviolability of borders,” and East European states now needed “clear reassurance” from the military alliance.
