Ada Colau, the mayor of Barcelona, and officials in other major Catalan municipalities have pushed back on requests to host an upcoming referendum on Catalan independence planned for October 1 amid fears that Spain’s courts will sanction politicians and officials.
The move by local governments covering a third of Catalonia’s population could complicate efforts by regional president Carles Puigdemont to hold the vote, after Spain’s Constitutional Court suspended the regional government’s referendum bill on Thursday.
Around 650 municipalities — representing about 40 percent of the region’s population — so far have agreed to cooperate on the referendum, Spanish press reported.
