The first anniversary of Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula falls on Wednesday (18 March). In Russia, the anniversary will be hard to miss: large celebrations are planned. The European Union will mark the moment in glum ways, both explicitly – EU foreign ministers will put out a critical statement when they meet today (16 March) – and, more generally, by dedicating much of a meeting of EU leaders (19-20 March) to issues related to Russia.
