The European Union yesterday evening agreed on a set of additional economic sanctions that it will impose on Russia depending on Russia’s response to a ceasefire agreed on Friday between Ukraine’s government and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
The agreement amounts to an incremental extension of the EU’s sanctions regime against Russia rather than a step-change, while the decision to delay the imposition of sanctions gives Russia an opportunity to avoid further restrictions on its financial, oil and defence sectors.
