The European Union decided Thursday to suspend most of its sanctions against Belarus after the authoritarian country freed political prisoners and did not crack down on dissent following this month’s flawed presidential election.
The asset freeze and travel ban applying to 170 people, including President Alexander Lukashenko, and an asset freeze applying to three Belarusian companies, will be suspended for four months starting on Saturday.
“The release of all political prisoners was a long-sought step by the European Union,” the European Council said in a statement. “Through the suspension of most restrictive measures the EU has reacted to this progress.”
