Russia has opened up a new front in its battle to undermine the Ukrainian government, testing the European Union’s
commitment to Kiev by threatening to cut off gas supplies.
The chief executive of the Russian state-controlled gas giant Gazprom, Aleksei Miller, warned that the halt to supplies would create “serious risks for gas transit to Europe”, a statement that implied Ukraine might opt to siphon off Russian gas for Ukrainian consumption rather than deliver gas to Gazprom’s EU customers.
