In a first, EU slaps sanctions on hackers in Russia, North Korea, China


The EU on Thursday announced sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans, on hacker groups believed to be behind three large-scale cybersecurity incidents that hit European countries in the last decade.
Legal indictments in the U.S., public statements by European cybersecurity authorities and information released by cybersecurity firms in past years have tied these three attacks to skilled hacker groups linked to state authorities in Russia, North Korea and China.
It’s the first time the EU has issued sanctions for cyberattacks, and the move is a milestone for the bloc and its response to hacks affecting its member countries.
