Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, yesterday (24 August) held talks with Mariano Rajoy, Spain’s prime minister, days before a European Union summit at which leaders aim to decide on a series of EU leadership positions.
With Merkel under increasing pressure from France and Italy to relax the EU’s policy of spending cuts and structural reforms, Spain, which has made progress in implementing structural reforms, appears a natural ally for the German chancellor.
