The Russian government nominated German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as an “independent director” on the board of the country’s largest oil company, Rosneft, according to an official government statement published late Friday.
Schröder — German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s predecessor — is already chairman of the shareholders’ committee of Nord Stream AG, a gas-pipeline consortium set up to transport Russian gas across the Baltic sea and into Germany.
Moscow owns a controlling stake in Rosneft, which is currently under Western economic sanctions originally imposed over Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
