WARSAW — Showing disdain for Vladimir Putin while not offending the Russian people is the tricky diplomatic challenge now being attempted by Poland and the rest of the EU during competing observances of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
Bronisław Komorowski, Poland’s president, tried to upstage the traditional ceremony marking the war’s end being held in Moscow on May 9 with a more modest remembrance on Thursday night at Westerplatte, the peninsula near Gdańsk where the war started in 1939.
