WARSAW — The left ruled Poland during four decades of communism and even after the collapse of the Soviet empire it remained a potent political force — but this year could mark its end.
The presidential election on May 9 could have been a chance for the left to pull itself together before parliamentary elections in the fall. Instead, it could be heading for a catastrophe. If the two left-wing candidates get a combined 10 percent, they will be very lucky, given that recent polls place them at six percent.
The Polish left’s problems are part of a decade-long decline.
