Pro-European parties in Moldova have emerged with a narrow parliamentary majority from national elections that international observers said were characterised by a battle over the country’s geopolitics.
With 94% of votes counted, the strongest party in the parliament is the Socialist Party (PSRM), whose leadership Russia has been courting. It secured 21.2% of the votes cast in the election yesterday (30 November). The third-largest group in parliament, the Communist Party of Vladimir Voronin (PCRM), has also adopted policies seen in Moldova as favouring Russia. Its share of the vote is 17.9%.
