A Russian court sentenced Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov to 20 years in prison on Tuesday on charges of plotting terrorist attacks in Crimea — prompting an outcry from fellow filmmakers and human rights organizations.
Sentsov gave up filmmaking to help coordinate support for Ukrainian servicemen trapped in their military base when Russian troops moved into Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in February 2014. He was arrested in May of that year during a protest against Russian annexation and is accused of having planned two attempted arson attacks in Simferopol.
