A Russian decision to continue gas transit to the European Union via Ukraine after the construction of Nord Stream 2 needs to make economic sense and not be politically motivated, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday.
“We don’t mind continuing with a certain amount of transit going through Ukraine — it just has to be economically feasible and not politically imposed,” Lavrov said, speaking alongside German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in Moscow.
Lavrov’s comments come after Chancellor Angela Merkel said last month that the planned Nord Stream 2 pipeline cannot go ahead “without clarity on the future transit role of Ukraine.”
