Thousands of people took to the streets of Moscow on Sunday to protest plans by the Russian government to demolish thousands of low-rise, Soviet-era apartment blocks in a move that could displace 1.6 million people from their homes over the next 20 years.
Under a sunny sky that signalled that spring may have finally arrived in the Russian capital, the demonstrators shouted for the resignation of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, the main driver behind the plan to replace the blocks of five-story buildings, known as “Khrushchevki” after the Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, who ordered construction of the pre-fab buildings.
