BERLIN — When word spread earlier this year that Germany’s most important transatlantic lobbying group planned to nominate Sigmar Gabriel, a prominent Russia-friendly socialist, as its next leader, many in the German capital thought it was a bad joke.
Largely unknown outside of Germany, Atlantik Brücke (German for Atlantic Bridge) was founded in 1952 by prominent bankers and politicians to foster transatlantic exchange. Since then, it has counted as one of Germany’s most exclusive clubs with a membership that has included the likes of Helmut Kohl and Angela Merkel, as well as the CEOs of the country’s largest companies.
