The leaders of Germany and France hope to meet the presidents of Russia and Ukraine next Thursday (15 January) for talks intended to end fighting in eastern Ukraine.
The summit, which has yet to be confirmed, would be held in Kazakhstan, which in the past year has joined the new Russian-dominated Eurasian Economic Union while also beefing up relations with the EU.
