Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said he had released Nadiya Savchenko after the Ukrainian army helicopter pilot spent two years in a Russian prison.
Putin said the release was aimed to “show mercy,” according to an AP report.
Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko’s said Savchenko had been released as part of a prisoner swap between Kiev and Moscow. Earlier on Wednesday Ukraine released two Russian nationals from custody, Aleksandr Aleksandrov and Yevgeny Yerofeyev, who were accused of being Russian soldiers and had been sentenced to 14 years in prison each.
