No, it’s not spring cleaning. It’s Passover, the celebration of the Jews being freed from slavery in Egypt.
The eight-day holiday begins a week from Friday, and one important item to stock up on before the supermarkets run out is matzo. Matzo is unleavened bread, which is symbolic of the haste with which the Jewish slaves had to leave Egypt and travel across the Red Sea before the pharaoh changed his mind about their freedom. During Passover Jews don’t eat leavened grains, so matzo is a substitute.
