LONDON (AP) — Fierce fighting persisted in eastern Ukraine last week even as a cease-fire brokered by European leaders was declared, and there were no clear signs that the conflict which has claimed more than 5,600 lives will end.
The leaders of Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine held marathon talks that resulted in a cease-fire deal for eastern Ukraine. But despite the peace deal, fighting between rebels and government troops continued in some key areas, mainly focused on a strategic railway hub.
