SARTANA, Ukraine (AP) — Fighting has intensified today in eastern Ukraine, where government troops and pro-Russia rebels are each claiming significant advances.
The fighting comes ahead of a crucial summit planned for tomorrow in Belarus involving the leaders of France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine.
Ukraine’s president says the talks are “one of the last” opportunities for ending the fighting.
The government today is accusing the rebels of shelling a town more than 30 miles away from the nearest front line. It says 12 people were killed and more than 60 others were wounded.
