WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A Ukrainian official is disputing a claim by Polish prime minister that Poland has taken in 1 million Ukrainian refugees.
The Ukrainian ambassador to Poland, Andrii Deshchytsia, said Wednesday that in fact Poland only granted refugee status to two Ukrainian citizens last year and that the many Ukrainians in Poland are actually economic migrants.
Polish leaders have argued for months that Poland can’t accept many asylum-seekers from the Middle East because the country is burdened by helping many Ukrainians who fled conflict in eastern Ukraine. The issue has strained Poland’s ties with other European Union states, particularly Germany.
