KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s president has hailed the ex-Soviet nation’s law enforcement agencies for tracking down prized Renaissance paintings stolen from a museum in Verona, Italy.
President Petro Poroshenko said Wednesday that the “brilliant operation” to recover 17 paintings by Rubens, Tintoretto, Pisanello and other Old Masters demonstrated Ukraine’s efficient fight against art smuggling. Poroshenko said the paintings’ estimated cost exceeded 16 million euros ($18.3 million).
