DONETSK, Ukraine –- Denis, a factory worker in his 30s who owns an apartment in the outlying Kirovsky district of this rebel stronghold, was made homeless this week when a shell exploded outside his apartment, blasting holes through its walls and shattering the windows.
“It’s too dangerous,” he said as he packed what belongings could fit into the back of a Soviet-era blue hatchback sedan before setting off to a family member’s home on the Ukrainian government-controlled side of the conflict line. “It’s just not safe here anymore.”
