Authorities in Russia have shut down what they call an “international criminal gang” that produced near $30 million worth of contraband cheese.
Russian President Vladimir Putin banned food imports from the U.S. and the European Union last year, as retaliation for western sanctions against Russia for its role in Ukraine. Earlier in August, Putin ordered the destruction of all smuggled food, leading to dramatic images of bulldozers running over foodstuff such as peaches and cheese.
