Canada has been asked to contribute up to 1,000 troops to a new force in eastern Europe as a warning that the NATO alliance will not tolerate any aggression against western allies by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The U.S., Britain and Germany have each promised 1,000 troops; Canada would be the fourth partner.
