This week, just as winter approaches, Russia suspended shipments of coal to Ukraine. Supplies had already been disrupted by Russian-backed insurgent activity in Ukraine’s eastern regions, which have fallen victim to a slow-motion Russian invasion in recent months. But the suspension of coal has taken an already acute problem and made it dire. Ukraine relied on Russia for its energy supplies, principally meaning natural gas and coal.
