Socialist-backed presidential candidate Rumen Radev has said Bulgaria “should not look on Russia as an enemy.”
Radev, who is expected to face the candidate of ruling GERB party in a runoff following November 06’s presidential elections, has told Reuters he would pursue a balanced foreign policy, based on national interest while also taking into account Bulgaria’s membership in NATO and the EU.
He has made clear Bulgaria’s membership in both organizations “has no alternative.”
But he has also insisted “anti-Russian rhetoric carries unecessary risks.”
Radev has also vowed to work towards lifting sanctions imposed on Russia bu the EU over the conflict in Ukraine.
